Travel is not always about leisure and wandering one should travel to rejuvenate mind, body, and soul.
That is how I ended up visiting Soma Manatheeram a classified heritage Ayurveda resort situated at about 9 km from Kovalam and is located along the inclines of a hill overlooking the Arabian sea.
For people traveling in search of peace and tranquility, Soma Manaltheeram is the right place to get completely lost in nature and within oneself.
The best part about this resort is that it is not like any usual resort offering leisure facilities instead it is World’s first Ayurveda Hospital with resort-like ambiance. I had heard a lot about the emerging Health tourism in India so I thought of experiencing the same and made a visit to Soma Manaltheeram.
Let’s explore this one of a kind resort the gypsy way.
How to reach:
One can take a flight to Trivandrum airport or train to Trivandrum Railway station. A pick up can be arranged to the resort which would take approx. 40 minutes to reach the resort.
The resort is situated downhill next to the beach and it’s a roller coaster ride to reach the resort. I was welcomed by the hospitable staff in the traditional Kerala style with garland, kumkum and tender coconut as a welcome drink.
Glimpses of the property
Post-check-in formalities I was taken to a beautiful cottage having authentic Kerala Architecture. It was a thatched hut overlooking the Arabian sea and surrounded by Coconut trees all around.
A soothing and cool room from inside filled with herbal and Ayurveda products. The fascinating part about staying in Soma Manaltheeram is that one can completely disconnect from the outside world by not getting involved in binge-watching TV as there are no Television sets provided in any of the rooms.
Although wifi and the phone facilities are provided in every room it is highly recommended to not keep oneself involved in surfing the internet or using mobile phones as the place is so perfect to get rid of all man-made inventions and just get lost in the lap of nature.
Every cottage is provided with private garden seating. I was lucky enough to get a sea facing garden view and I enjoyed watching the sunset.
The best part about staying in this resort is to just relax and do nothing. That is what I enjoyed the most lying down on a hammock for hours together.
What I miss the most is swinging by the beach and peacefully observing the waves, the sun and the sky.
There are total of 70 cottages spread across 8 acres of the land and each cottage is an independent entity where modernity and architectural ethnicity collaborate together to relax your mind and body.
Soma Manaltheeram is a natural habitat for a lot of peacocks that keep wandering around the property and their presence adds more beauty to the surroundings.
Since this is an Ayurveda resort the kind of food that is served is not similar to what we have on a daily basis filled with a lot of salt and spices instead the food is categorized based on the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha that are derived from the five elements also known as mind-body types, the doshas express unique blends of physical, emotional, and mental characteristics.
As per the doctor’s consultation every person is examined thoroughly and categorized based on three doshas and unique food menu is prepared for each individual and he/she is supposed to consume the same for better health benefits and healing any ailments.
The resort serves herbal water for drinking purposes which is useful in the smooth working of the digestive system.
The food menu consists of 250 vegetarian dishes made from an assortment of vegetables, raw salads, and fruit juices. The purification therapy of Ayurveda leaves no room for your system to fail.
The restaurant has a beach view too. One can enjoy the food by the beach, sip some tender coconut and experience joy.

At Soma Manaltheeram one can have a complete rejuvenation package by practicing some yoga. Trained Yoga Guru conduct three sessions daily as per an individual’s needs and comfort.ie.Beginners, intermediate and advanced sessions.
Morning Yoga sessions conducted on the open lawns helps the body to imbibe the revitalizing energy of the sun. The sessions are usually held in a group for 1 hour. On special request, individual Yoga sessions can be arranged for better practice.
Practicing early morning yoga to relieve the mental stress and enabling myself to address life with calm and ease.
One of the best activities that I enjoyed at Soma Manaltheeram is the meditation. For quite some time I had been trying to practice it on my own but all in vain. All I was looking for someone to teach me how to meditate perfectly and I must tell you I did learn it finally under the presence of a Guru at Soma Manaltheeram.
The Dhyana center just next to the sea is a perfect spot to meditate and let loose all the unwanted elements and thoughts from the mind. Ayurveda in combination with meditation cleanses one’s mind, body, and soul of toxins.
Another eye-catching beauty at Soma Manltheeram is the vast Arabian sea which serves as a private beach of the property. The sunrise and sunset are an incredible treat to watch out. The beach is all cool and calm in the early morning and suitable for a quick bath or a long walk.
Most of the tourists sit by the beach and enjoy the sunbath, read books from the resort’s library collection, sip fresh fruit juices and tender coconut.
The motto is to just get lost in the lap of nature, watch the infinite sea and let yourself loose.
Sit out in the evenings during the fading dusk to experience the gradual appearance of the flickering lights in the sea from the fishing vessels.
Spend some time by the pool
By now one must have realized Soma Manaltheeram is a perfect spot for rejuvenation of mind, body, and soul but how about experiencing some leisure activities too.
The resort has an amazing infinity pool giving a perfect view of the sea. One can just relax in the pool for hours together, indulge in swimming and enjoy refreshing drinks.
As the sun sets down, the resort becomes even more beautifully decorated with glittering lights all around. Every evening cultural activities are held to make the tourists aware of the rich culture of Kerala
and the food is served as per the traditional Kerala style on a banana leaf.
People who are looking for rejuvenation and relaxation, a visit and stay at Soma Manaltheeram is highly recommended. The eye-catching factor is that it is a Hospital with a resort-like ambiance and I completely agree to it. Throughout my stay, I did not even feel like I am in a hospital as the surroundings were completely different from the conventional hospital.
I did undergo medication and this was the purification of my mind, body, and soul. I was glad to discover the untold and undiscovered channels to my mind and I definitely plan to revisit here again.
Surprisingly the resort is very famous amongst German, Italian, French and Russian tourists and they keep visiting Soma every year to relax and undergo long-term treatments. Just like foreign tourist appreciate medical tourism in India similarly the Indian tourist should experience the same by visiting Soma Manaltheeram.
